This case concerns a 61-year-old woman from Maryland who was on vacation in Colorado. She and her family were skiing at a large resort. She was an intermediate skier and mostly skied green and blue runs.
Her medical history was significant for an aortic valve replacement and she was anticoagulated on Coumadin.
It was her fifth day in Colorado when she went down a blue run named “Sneakys” with her husband.
She was skiing in the middle of the run when she suddenly crashed. She struck her head on the ground and lost consciousness for several minutes. She was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Ski patrol arrived and assessed the patient. They found her to be slightly confused and she had no memory of the crash. Therefore she was taken off the mountain and brought to a nearby hospital.
The ED that day was staffed by a general surgeon. He saw the patient and wrote the following note.
